Hey all-

I just recently bought a 1991 NA (Mariner Blue) with aftermarket rims (ugly Motegi 18" 7 spokes). I am assuming this car is a A package based on lack of power anything and no power steering.

1) can someone tell me if there is a way from the VIN if you can tell what package it was originally made with?

2) I had a 1990 B package (I think) in the early 2000s (before I found Miata.Net). It had daisies. If you put daisies on an A package car that originally had steel wheels, is there any problem created by the offset? (saw a page that indicated the daisies have a 45 offset).

3) How can one tell a Limited Slip rear from sight? Or VIN? My B package back then had one from factory I believe but I do not remember how I knew that.

4) can someone point me to a link to a correct Daisy lug nut? I know I need a 12x1.5 but everything in my local autozone that is acorn style is to tall for the daisy center caps? Where these just nuts???

5) Also, if some Miata.net member is willing, I would love to have someone put a tape measure on the hardtop for the NA and tell me the dimensions at highest point, widest point, and longest point. I plan to bid one on ebay when one comes up near me and want to know if it will fit on my small trailer.

Thanks guys....
Tim

Always check the feature tables here first: http://www.miata.net/faq/features.html

No P/S means you have a "base" 1991. Base cars came with steel wheels. They should have the same offset as the daisy wheels. Daisy wheels came with non-acorn lug nuts. I think this is the part. http://parts.arlingtonmazda.com/products/LUG-NUT-%280603%252d26%252d161A%29.html

Standard lug nut available at any parts store...12x1.5..except maybe autozone...try a REAL parts store..like NAPA

Hardtop?...drive the Miata to pick it up and put it on...problem solved

Garage section has some really good pics of rear ends and how to identify them...link at the bottom of every page

Garage section has loads of info...spend some time there

No power steering is a plus, many of us de-power our steering racks for increased sensitivity in steering feel.

Mariner blue is a paint color which has stood up really well. The red paint tended to fade. The white can have adhesion problems. But the blue did well over time. And the blue was the least common color, which some feel is more desirable if only for this reason.

You can pick up a set of used daisy's for not much. $200 should do it. Try Craig's list.

You know about the potential Short Nose Crank problem, which was solved in the middle of 1991, right? If this last digits of your VIN are 209446 or higher you are in the clear. Otherwise google 'miata.net' and 'SNC' for details.

Congratulations on your purchase.

#1 & #3 - Call Mazda with your VIN and ask for the package information.

Regarding #5; are you looking for the Length / With / Height to fit on a trailer? What is the reasoning as it will fit on car with soft top folded down? I can measure mine if needed. I'm am hour west of you on I-24.

Yeah, I was looking for the dimensions to put it on a SMALL trailer I use to tote around the lawnmower. I was going to just drive up in the miata if I won the auction, but I didn't making the measurement moot. (The reason I decided on trailer rather than drive it, assemble it, and return was just precaution. What if it didn't fit? What if I was missing hardware. Just belt and suspenders approach, I suppose.

Also, I gave my VIN to the Mazda guy and it seems to be an A package with a Limited Slip rear.

On the hard top, if you have the 2 Frankenstein bolts in front of the trunk, it will fit, the only thing you need, is another person to help you put it on.
I bought a hard top that came off an '03 Miata and it fit just fine on my '94.
At some point my car had a hardtop because it already had the side strikers installed when I bought the car.
You don't need the side strikers for the top to stay latched on but I'd add the side striker in the future, I've seen them sell for about $100.
